Lovin’ Life!
on September 1, 2014Chapter: Chapter 6: Secret Origins
Location: Costa Rica, Electrical Substation
She’s Alive!
Sandia springs to life! Finally, after the constant beat down she shows signs of an uplifting zest for life! How inspirational! :OP
Inks! Yeah, there’s no way I’m going to color this. I’ll hire a colorist for this one!
Joseph :O)
She really needs to pull herself together. Nice detail on the flowing earwax Joseph.
Sandia’s just happy to be on solid ground! Thanks, Tony!
How long does it take you to draw something like this? Cool
Too long, Brad. I did a full size rough sketch and decided to start over. Also, family obligations and a sick child breaks up the time I can dedicate to it. Thankfully, my daughter is well now. I still have to finish it and start the next page. Plus, I my brother-in-law is coming in from out of town for a visit.
I think I have about ten hours into it already.
That’s a lot more life than any of my characters have! š
Hahaha! For a while there I thought Sandia was going to be one of the undead!
AMAZING pencil work! I just love seeing your process. Your art skills are so spectacular. WOW!!!!
I’m glad you got to spend some time with family. Very inspiring that you do art and make time for others in your life. That’s important.
I look forward to the progression. (I especially love your eyeballs- so cool!)
Have a great week!
Thanks, Pamo! I do my best to push myself to explore new territories. I feel I’m improving a bit in some areas and strive to do better in others.
My goal is to pencil and ink a page each week. Then have a colorist do the coloring. It’s too tedious for me.
How dare your family!
Sandia is going to be tied in so many knots she’ll never be straightened out!
She can join the freak show as a contortionist!
I grumble and kick and moan when I’m pulled away from a good art session. But once I’m with my family, I calm myself and enjoy time with them.
Whenever my kids are away with their grandma, I get so excited about how much time I can devote to my drawings. But when the house is silent, I miss them a lot and can’t focus on my work. Catch-22 :OP
Maybe when they get a little older you can use them art slaves, I mean assistants. Then you can spend time with them and your art as well!
Hahaha! I’m hoping that one will take over as colorist. That’ll save me a bunch of time and money! “You won’t eat until the page is colored!” :OP
That is some wicked stretchability! š
She does look mighty wicked in this shot, Bill. Completely off model. But I figured I can get away with it being that she’s a stretchy character now. I wonder if Sandia can return to her usual weirdo self?
Plastic man ain’t got nothing on her!
Haha! Thanks, Michael! I love Jack Cole’s Plastic Man. And to think he wanted to call his character the India Rubber Man! I have several issue’s of his Plas and they are amazing! Jack’s my hero! :O)
She’s gummy and lovin’ it!
Livin’ life in the gummy lane sure is sweet!
Wow, it’s Stretch Armstrong Sandi!
Hee Hee! I always wanted one of those toys but never got one. I think it’s time to surf on over to eBay!
If you combined the DNA of the Fleischer Studios, Basil Wolverton, and classic Warner Bros cartoons with Silly Putty, you still wouldn’t be able to touch this stuff! LOVE it, Joseph!
WOW! Thank you so much, Mark! Those are very encouraging words and I’m doing my best to deliver on that! I love the 20’s through 50’s cartoon and comic characters. Amazing artwork! And as a kid I was always fascinated by how Basil can do such disgusting art and make it look so beautiful.
All of those creators had that rubbery, fluid, bouncy style that just draws you in. I recently watched a Betty Boop marathon (remember Grampy?), it was SO much fun! Wolverton would literally twist his characters inside out!
I can see all the work you put into this page in every line, there’s so much detail here!
Grampy is my favorite Betty Boop character! I love his wacky inventions:
I also look to Wolverton’s grotesque characters for inspiration. He was a genius!
Thank you for the compliment, Mark! As I was inking this page I felt I may have over did it with the detail. But it’ll become more clear when it’s colored. I just have to work on making it more clear without coloring. Like Jeff Smith.
So intricate, so detailed, so mind melting, so good.
Thank you, Mike! If Sandia sticks around any longer she’ll definitely melt!
That’s a lot of earwax!
That’s enough to butter your popcorn for today’s movie!
WOW! that’s amazing Joseph! Very oozy but awesome! Can’t wait to see the finish!
Oozy goodness as far as Sandia is concerned! Thanks, Rich! I can’t wait to see the colored version!
Inks look great Joseph! I like how Sandias body is clean and cartoony amidst the many detailed objects š
Thanks, Mat! I added elements like fire and pebbles to the background so that Sandia will pop out more. I’m glad you think it works!
The inks look great!
Inking is so much fun! I couldn’t just keep posting pencils anymore. Thanks, David! :O)
This is disappointing…. because I am not doing this. Amazing work!! love the perspective and attention to detail.
I have a one point and a two point perspective in this spread. Thank you for your encouraging words, Rich!
I just clicked back and now see your amazing inks! I’m bowled over!!! AWESOME work!
Wow! Just plain WOW!!!
Thank you, Pamo! I do my best and am working to always improve! :O)
There is so much going on in the page. Its amazing! Great Job Joseph! š
You’ve got amazing talent.
How long did it take you to complete, if i may ask?
Thanks, Dapman! I am humbled by your compliment! The pencils took about twelve hours and then another twelve hours for the inks. I gotta say this is my fastest time yet! I feel Iām getting into a good groove! :O)
Great inking! You always cram so much detail into your drawings. I don’t think you need a colorist. You need a coloring department!
I don’t normally get into stuff like this… but, I feel you’ve got something here! Wishing you all the success in the world! (I’ll be reading these when I have more time, so far I’m on your 10th page and going!)
Wow! Thank you, dnovasr1! And welcome to Wacky Monkeys! Make yourself at home :O) Ooo! Ooo! Aaa! Aaa!
Hahaha! Thanks, Peter! I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my hiring a colorist. Maybe I will or maybe I’ll just hire a flatter. That’ll shave off several hours of tedious work. But I’m not quite sure what to do yet.
A flatter? I guess that’s different than a flatterer.
It’s the flattest! :OP
A flatter gets the area ready for color by isolating characters, objects and backgrounds with placeholder colors. That way, I can just select the area of color and make my changes. It shaves off hours of work. Usually, a flatter charges $10 per page. Whereas a colorist charges around $30 per page.
I didn’t know that! Thanks for the explanation.
I love the contrast!
Thanks, Jason! I’m working on incorporating more areas of black and getting the right balance of black, white and gray.
Didn’t realise there was so much detail before you inked it Joseph. That must’ve taken a long time
